Alzheimer’s disease
Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that causes the gradual degeneration of brain cells. It is the most common cause of dementia, primarily affecting memory, thinking, and behavior—most often in older adults.
Causes of Alzheimer’s Disease
While the exact cause remains unclear, recent research (2024–2025) has identified several key contributing factors:
- Genetic predisposition and family history
- Accumulation of beta-amyloid plaques and tau protein tangles in the brain
- Advancing age, particularly after age 65
- Underlying health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, chronic stress, and limited cognitive stimulation
Common Signs and Symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease
Alzheimer’s symptoms develop gradually and worsen over time. Early detection is critical. Common signs include:
- Short-term memory loss or difficulty recalling recent events
- Confusion regarding time, place, or familiar people
- Difficulty speaking, writing, or following conversations
- Impaired planning, problem-solving, or decision-making
- Forgetting routine tasks (e.g., turning off the stove, getting lost on familiar routes)
- Changes in mood or personality—such as irritability, depression, or apathy
- In later stages: loss of mobility, difficulty swallowing, and complete dependence on caregivers
